This report aims to provide insight into the unique planning and management challenges associated with global climate change, and how they are effecting the complex interaction between science and natural resource management at the Federal level in the U.S., with a particular focus on the Pacific Northwest (PNW).
Source information from literature, stakeholder workshops, conferences, and agency representative interviews were used. This information has been organized into three main sections. First the unique attributes of climate change and institutional structure are discussed to highlight what makes the integration of these two so challenging.
Second, a comprehensive review of the Department of the Interior's Landscape Conservation Cooperatives and Climate Science Centers is presented, discussing the current development of these entities to promote and enable effective communication and collaboration among Federal agencies, and the greater climate change adaptation community.
Lastly, the report includes stand-alone sections discussing five key challenges currently being faced in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts and some of the specific responses by federal agencies and their partners to address these challenges.
